The mild climate, with its four distinct seasons, provides fine weather for outdoor activities year-round. The city of 40,000 – which is part of a metropolitan area of 250,000 - is conveniently situated at the junction of I-26 and I-85, making it easily accessible to both mountain and beach resorts. As the home of six higher learning institutions, Spartanburg is a college town.
The Director of Youth and Leisure Ministries is a fulltime position. The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall youth and leisure ministry of Trinity Church with youth ministry requiring approximately 75% of the director’s time and leisure ministries the remaining time.
While it is preferred that the candidate be a member of the United Methodist Church, the successful candidate will have knowledge of the United Methodist Church’s structure, doctrine, program, and curriculum and be a person who is spiritually mature and confident in the faith, modeling a lifestyle of Christian discipleship.
The successful candidate will have the necessary education to fulfill the duties and a minimum of a bachelors degree (or comparable work experience) with a masters degree in Christian Education or related field is preferred.

SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA
POSITION: The Director of Youth and Leisure Ministries reports to the Senior Pastor and the Staff Parish Relations Committee. This position is responsible for directing, planning, and implementing the youth and leisure ministries of Trinity United Methodist Church.
A. The Director of Youth and Leisure Ministries shall have the ability to develop the age appropriate Christian education programs, recruit, guide and train volunteers and leaders. The director should have a knowledge of the United Methodist structure, program, and curriculum. It is preferred that the director be a member of the United Methodist Church.
B. The Director of Youth and Leisure Ministries shall establish goals and objectives by prioritizing
related programs, managing the use of recreation facilities, planning appropriate budgets,
delegating tasks, regularly evaluating progress, and other duties as assigned.
C. The Director of Youth and Leisure Ministries shall have sound judgment, possess the ability to work with people, and the physical capacity to meet the demands of the job.
D. The Director of Youth and Leisure Ministries shall have the necessary education to fulfill the duties
of the position. It is expected that the director have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or comparable
work experience. A Masters degree in Christian Education or related field is preferred.
E. The Director of Youth and Leisure Ministries shall be spiritually mature and confident in the faith,
modeling a lifestyle of Christian discipleship and regularly attending and participating in Sunday School, worship, and other activities of Trinity Church.
F. The Director of Youth and Leisure Ministries shall have an appropriate Commercial Driver’s License.
Youth Ministry – Primary Responsibility (75%)
1. Coordinate, supervise and implement all programs in Christian Education that focus on youth, in a plan that demonstrates equally four components: learning, service, worship and fellowship. (Curriculum decisions shall be made in partnership with the Associate Pastor who is responsible for all Christian education ministry of the Church.)
2. Recruit, train and support Sunday School teachers and UMYF counselors for grades 6-12.
3. Plan, promote, implement and attend all youth programs and activities including: Sunday night UMYF meetings, youth retreats and other special activities (i.e. annual Youth Sunday, Weekly Bible study for Youth, confirmation classes.)
4. Grow the Youth Ministry of Trinity Church by increasing the number of Trinity’s youth who are active participants, and by increasing the opportunities available for youth.
5. Encourage and coordinate various opportunities of service and missions during the year (i.e.
Souper Bowl Sunday) and opportunities in the summer ( i.e. Salkehatchie.)
6. Promote district and conference events available to youth.
7. Grow and develop leadership among the youth and guide an effective Youth Council in planning all activities.
8. Communicate with parents, involve them when appropriate, and provide parenting programs as requested.
9. Publicize ongoing programs and upcoming activities
10. Establish rapport with youth and be available to counsel.
11. Maintain a consistent communication with all youth.
12. Maintain scheduled office hours, yet allow time for visitation in homes, schools, student activities, for teacher visitation and recruitment, for active participation in solving a need or problem.
13. Encourage youth to develop their gifts in every setting, including the music ministry of Trinity Church.
Leisure Ministries (25%)
1. Plan, coordinate and administer an effective and comprehensive activities program to enrich the fellowship of the congregation that includes recreation, wellness, and athletic activities for all age groups.
2. Recruit and train facilitators for the leisure ministries activities and recreation program.
3. Plan, promote, and direct churchwide events for the congregation (not sponsored by other committees or groups in the church) including Wednesday evening fellowship.
4. Plan and coordinate church basketball program including the recruitment and motivation of coaches.
5. Coordinate all transportation needs of the church program, including maintenance and repair of church-owned vehicles and the scheduling of their use.
6. Coordinate and schedule use of the Christian Life Center (CLC).
7. Maintain an inventory of recreation equipment and supplies, purchasing as needed.
Although hours worked will vary from week to week according to the changing nature of the responsibilities, the position of Director of Youth and Leisure Ministries is fulltime. Office hours will be maintained and publicized. Additionally, the Director of Youth and Leisure Ministries shall serve as staff liaison to all appropriate committees, attending those committee meetings and supporting their efforts by providing resources to enable them to fulfill their respective ministries. The director will work in concert with other members of the staff and attend staff meetings, staff retreats and other scheduled staff events.
Continuing Education for the director will be anticipated and supported.
